There are moments in our animal welfare work that touch us deeply in our hearts. When we recently found a small kitten alone in the countryside, it was just such a moment. We were out looking for stray cats when we noticed a tiny, barely audible meow. Sitting between tall grass and damp leaves was a small bundle of fur, completely exhausted and freezing cold. But for this one little creature, everything was about to change on that day.
How We Found the Small Kitten Alone in the Countryside
The little foundling's condition was worrying. It was trembling all over, thoroughly chilled, and showing clear signs of weakness. All alone outdoors in nature, its tiny body stood little chance of retaining its own warmth. On top of that was its immense fear: every sudden movement made the kitten flinch. It was clear that we had to proceed carefully so as not to startle the little one any further.
We couldn't just reach out and grab it. A frightened, hypothermic kitten can panic and run away—often to places where we can no longer help it. We therefore decided to take it step by step. First, it was all about radiating calm and signaling to the kitten that we posed no danger.
Finding a Small Kitten Alone in the Countryside: Patience Pays Off
To gain the animal's trust, we set up a feeding spot. We offered aromatic, high-quality wet food to arouse its hunger. Sitting quietly on the ground a short distance away, we waited. It required a great deal of patience and dedication, but after a while, hunger won over fear. The kitten cautiously emerged from its hiding place, sniffed the air, and slowly approached the food bowl.
Day by day, meal by meal, the little creature grew braver. It sensed that regular food and softly spoken words meant something good. Eventually, the ice was broken: not only did the kitten let us feed it without fear, but it gradually sought contact with us. Now we could safely rescue it and take it into our care to warm it up and nurse it back to health.
Medical Care and Stabilization
In our care, the actual recovery phase began. The kitten was gradually warmed up and provided with nutritious, easily digestible food. It was wonderful to watch life return to the small body. Its eyes grew clearer, its fur softer, and its affection for us stronger with each passing day.
As soon as the kitten was stable enough, we had our veterinarian examine it thoroughly. Alongside a general health check, one point was especially important to us: neutering. Controlled spaying and neutering is the only sustainable way to end the plight of street cats in Croatia long-term and prevent unwanted offspring. The kitten handled the routine procedure fantastically and was able to recover quietly in our care afterward.
A Healthy Fresh Start in its Familiar Territory
Once the kitten was fully recovered, vaccinated, and neutered, we faced the decision about its future. Since the little creature was accustomed to freedom and living outdoors, feeling most comfortable outside, it was allowed to return to its familiar surroundings after full healing.
But this time, everything was different. The kitten no longer had to endure hunger or cold. It is now part of a feeding station managed by us, receives fresh food daily, and is monitored medically. It now lives healthy, neutered, and protected in its familiar environment—without the constant danger of malnutrition or unwanted breeding.
