There are moments in our animal rescue work that touch us deep in our hearts. When we recently found a small kitten all alone outdoors, it was exactly one of those moments. We were out looking for stray cats when a tiny, barely audible meow caught our attention. Sitting between high grass and damp leaves was a small bundle of fur, completely exhausted and freezing cold. In Croatia, where our private Swiss rescue project help4cats.ch is active, countless street cats fight for survival every single day. But for this one little soul, everything was about to change that day.
How we found the small kitten all alone outdoors
The little stray's condition was worrying. Shivering all over, cold to the bone, it showed clear signs of weakness. All alone out in nature, the tiny body had almost no way to hold onto its own body heat. On top of that was deep fear: every sudden movement made the kitten flinch. It was clear that we had to proceed with extreme caution so as not to scare the little one even more.
We couldn't just reach out and grab it. A frightened, hypothermic kitten can panic and run away – often to places where we would no longer be able to reach or help it. So, we decided to take it step by step. First, it was all about radiating calm and signaling to the kitten that we posed no danger.
Found a small kitten all alone outdoors: Patience leads to success
To win the animal's trust, we set up a feeding spot. We offered aromatic, high-quality wet food to awaken its appetite. Sitting quietly on the ground a short distance away, we waited. It required a great deal of patience and dedication, but after a while, hunger won over fear. The kitten hesitantly emerged from its hiding spot, sniffed the air, and slowly approached the food bowl.
Day by day, meal by meal, the little creature gathered more courage. It sensed that the regular food and softly spoken words were meant with good intentions. Finally, the ice was broken: not only did the kitten let us feed it without fear, but it actively sought contact with us step by step. Now we could safely secure it and bring it into our care to warm it up and nurse it back to health.
Medical care and stabilization
The real recovery phase began under our care. The kitten was gradually warmed up and provided with nutritious, easily digestible food. It was wonderful to watch life return to the tiny body. Its eyes grew clearer, its coat softer, and its affection for us stronger with every passing day.
As soon as the kitten was stable enough, we had our veterinarian conduct a thorough examination. Besides a general health check, one point was particularly important to us: neutering. Controlled spaying and neutering is the only sustainable way to break the cycle of suffering for stray cats in Croatia in the long term and prevent unwanted offspring. The kitten handled the routine procedure fantastically and was able to recover in peace with us afterwards.
A healthy new start in familiar territory
Once the kitten had fully recovered, been vaccinated, and neutered, we faced a decision about its future. Because the little one was used to freedom and life outdoors, feeling most comfortable in the green surroundings, it was allowed to return to its familiar environment after complete healing.
However, this time everything was different. The kitten no longer had to starve or freeze. It is now part of a feeding station managed by us, receives fresh food daily, and is monitored medically. It now lives healthy, neutered, and protected in its familiar surroundings – free from the constant threat of malnutrition or unwanted breeding.
